| | Tripura as an Education Destination | |
Within its small geographical area, Tripura offers plenty of opportunities for students from both within and outside the state. The Indian Government granted Tripura the status of a state on 21st January 1972. The Department of Education was established to enable smooth functioning of the education system at all levels. The department was further trifurcated to three separate sections namely; Education (School), Education (Higher) and Social Welfare & Social Education Department. The state’s literacy rate figures 73.66% according to 2001 census report. The government has introduced a free and compulsory education policy that provides education to the students falling in the age group of 6-14 yrs. There are four stages in the education system of Tripura. The primary stage consists of Classes I-V, middle stage consists of Classes VI-VIII and the secondary stage consists of Classes IX-X. The higher secondary stage consists of Classes XI and XII. The state has one University, two Medical Colleges, one Pharmacy College and a number of Engineering Colleges and Polytechnics. Since the no. of institutions is less in the state, students usually migrate to Kolkata and Guwahati to pursue higher education. The government is trying to bring education to the grass root level by initiating several plans and policies with the help of NGOs. Administration Shri Anil Sarkar Minister, Government of Tripura
