Going back in the history, late in 1937, B Bir Bikramkishore Manikya, the last Maharaja of Tripura, had first planned for establishing a college in Agartala in an area of 254 acres of land with beautiful landscape.
A committee was also formed naming, Vidyapattan Governing Committee to carry forward the scheme of higher education with an amount of Rs. 50,000.
The foundation stone for this University was laid on May 1937. After the outbreak of Second World War all the constructions were damaged. After this the construction work could not be started immediately due to certain difficulties and after 17 May, 1947, when Maharaja Bir Bikram breathed his last, Tripura became restive for various reasons. As a result, the entire scheme of Vidyapattan could not be implemented at that time.
The MBB College (popularly known as the Dream College), affiliated to the Calcutta University, was once the only college in the state. Later on, the college was elevated to th position of Tripura University.
